10 Day South Island Itinerary: Queenstown, Milford Sound & Beyond

The perfect 10-day road trip covering the best of New Zealand's South Island

21 March 2026 Queenstown

Ten days on New Zealand's South Island is the sweet spot — enough time to see the major highlights without rushing, with room for a couple of slow days.

This itinerary starts and ends in Queenstown (the most common fly-in/fly-out point) and covers the South Island's best experiences.

Day 1: Arrive in Queenstown

Fly into Queenstown. Check in, walk the lakefront, Skyline Gondola for the panoramic view. Dinner at Steamer Wharf.

Day 2: Queenstown Adventure Day

Morning: Shotover Jet ($159) Afternoon: Kawarau Bridge Bungy ($205) or Arrowtown + wine tasting Evening: Dinner in town, Queenstown nightlife

Day 3: Milford Sound (Full Day)

Coach tour from Queenstown (depart 7am, return 8pm). The drive through Fiordland is spectacular. 2-hour cruise on the fiord. $200–$260.

Day 4: Glenorchy + Queenstown Free Day

Morning: Drive to Glenorchy (45 min). Lagoon walk, Lord of the Rings scenery, Dart River Jet optional ($299). Afternoon: Lake Hayes walk, Queenstown Gardens, or TSS Earnslaw cruise.

Day 5: Queenstown → Wanaka (via Crown Range)

Morning: Drive the Crown Range to Wanaka (1 hour). Stop at the summit viewpoint. Afternoon: Wanaka Tree, lakefront walk, Puzzling World. Evening: Dinner at Francesca's Italian Kitchen or Federal Diner. Stay: Wanaka (1 night)

Day 6: Wanaka → Mount Cook

Morning: Optional — Roys Peak hike (if you're up for 5–6 hours) or Rob Roy Glacier track (4 hours, easier). Afternoon: Drive Wanaka → Twizel → Mount Cook Village (3 hours). Evening: Walk to the Hooker Valley lookout (short evening walk). The view of Mount Cook at sunset is extraordinary. Stay: Mount Cook Village (1 night) — book early, limited accommodation

Day 7: Mount Cook → Lake Tekapo

Morning: Hooker Valley Track (3 hours return) — one of New Zealand's most beautiful day walks. Views of Mount Cook the entire way. Afternoon: Drive to Lake Tekapo (1.5 hours). Church of the Good Shepherd. Lake swimming if it's warm. Evening: Dark Sky stargazing at Mount John Observatory ($55). Lake Tekapo is an International Dark Sky Reserve — the stars are extraordinary. Stay: Lake Tekapo (1 night)

Day 8: Lake Tekapo → Christchurch

Drive: Lake Tekapo to Christchurch (3 hours via SH8/SH1). Afternoon: Explore Christchurch — the rebuilt city centre is genuinely interesting. Riverside Market for food, Christchurch Art Gallery, Botanic Gardens. Evening: Dinner in the city — Christchurch has an excellent restaurant scene. Stay: Christchurch (1 night)

Day 9: Christchurch → Arthur's Pass → West Coast (Optional Extension)

Option A (West Coast): Drive Christchurch → Arthur's Pass → Hokitika (4 hours). Arthur's Pass is stunning mountain scenery. Hokitika has excellent greenstone (pounamu) galleries. Stay: Hokitika or Greymouth (1 night)

Option B (Kaikōura): Drive north to Kaikōura (2.5 hours) for whale watching, seal colony, and seafood. The coastline is dramatic. Stay: Kaikōura (1 night)

Option C (Extra Queenstown day): Fly back to Queenstown and spend the day on anything you missed.

Day 10: Return to Queenstown

If on West Coast: Drive Hokitika → Haast Pass → Wanaka → Queenstown (6 hours, spectacular scenery through the West Coast rainforest). If in Kaikōura: Fly Christchurch → Queenstown (1.5 hours). Use the morning for one last Kaikōura activity. Afternoon: Final Queenstown time. Last walk, last coffee, last lake view. Evening: Depart Queenstown.

Tips

Book Mount Cook accommodation early. There are very few options and they sell out months ahead in peak season.

Start in Queenstown. Most South Island road trips work best starting from Queenstown and looping south–east–north.

Rent a car, not a campervan (unless you specifically want the campervan experience). Cars are cheaper, faster, and easier to park.

Download offline maps. Much of the route has no cell coverage (Milford Road, Haast Pass, Arthur's Pass).
