The Eighth Wonder of the World: A Field Guide to Milford Sound
“Where glacier-carved granite spires plunge 1,600 metres vertically into dark, emerald ocean waters and ancient rain forests cling to vertical cliffs.”

The Geological Masterpiece of Te Wāhipounamu
Milford Sound (known in Māori as Piopiotahi) is neither a sound nor an ordinary valley. It is an authentic marine fiord carved over hundreds of thousands of years by colossal Pleistocene glaciers grinding their way through the Southern Alps directly to the Tasman Sea.
Rising 1,692 metres sheer from the surface of the fiord, Mitre Peak (Rahotu) stands as the world’s tallest sea cliff rising straight out of ocean water. With over 6.8 metres of annual rainfall, hundreds of temporary waterfalls cascade down sheer moss-draped rock faces after every alpine squall.
Glacial Waters & Stirling Falls Glacial Showers
Vessels navigating the fiord venture within inches of Stirling Falls, a 151-metre torrent plunging from a hanging glacial valley between Elephant and Lion mountains. The fresh glacial spray creates permanent rainbows and oxygenates the dark tannin layer where rare black coral colonies flourish at shallow depths.

The Tannin Layer: Rain falling through dense rainforest washes organic tannins into the fiord, creating a dark, tea-colored freshwater surface layer that blocks sunlight and allows deep-sea black coral trees to thrive at depths of just 10 metres.

Homer Tunnel Transit: Opened in 1953, the 1.2km unlined Homer Tunnel pierces straight through solid granite under the Darran Mountains at an elevation of 945 metres. Always monitor real-time road conditions before departing Queenstown.
Glacier Aviation: Fly-Cruise-Fly Above the Southern Alps
For those seeking to bypass the 4.5-hour one-way mountain drive, scenic flights departing Queenstown Airport soar directly above Lake Wakatipu, the Richardson Mountains, the Tutoko Glacier, and the rugged peaks of the Darran Range before landing directly at Milford Sound airstrip.
