Queenstown 7 Day Itinerary: The Perfect Week in New Zealand

Make the most of a full week — covering Queenstown, Milford Sound, Wanaka, and more

20 March 2026 Queenstown

Seven days in the Queenstown region is the sweet spot. Enough time to do Milford Sound properly, explore Wanaka, fit in the adventure activities that brought you here, and still enjoy some slow mornings.

This itinerary works for first-timers. It's structured, but with flexibility built in.

Day 1: Arrive in Queenstown

Morning/Afternoon: Arrival Fly into Queenstown Airport — 15 minutes from town. Check in, walk the lakefront, get oriented. The Queenstown Gardens and waterfront area are perfect for a first afternoon.

Afternoon: Skyline Gondola Your first Queenstown activity: the Skyline Gondola to Bob's Peak. Take the luge, sit with a coffee, watch the town below. This is your introduction to the landscape.

Evening: Steamer Wharf Dinner at Steamer Wharf — Fish Bone for seafood, or Bazaar for something more international. Watch the sunset over the Remarkables from the outdoor terrace.

---

Day 2: Adventure Day

Morning: Shotover Jet (9am) Book the earliest available slot. 25 minutes of pure adrenaline through the Shotover Canyon. Done by 11am.

Afternoon: Kawarau Bridge Bungy (optional) The world's first commercial bungy jump site. 43m over the Kawarau River gorge. If you're doing one bungy this trip, this is the iconic choice.

Alternatively: AJ Hackett Nevis Bungy (134m, New Zealand's highest) for those wanting the maximum experience.

Evening: Arrowtown Drive 20 minutes to Arrowtown for dinner. The Fork and Tap or Provisions are excellent. A quieter, more local evening after an adrenaline day.

---

Day 3: Milford Sound (Full Day)

5:30am: Early start Milford Sound day trips from Queenstown are long — depart by 7am via coach or your own car. The drive through Fiordland National Park takes 4.5 hours.

12:00pm: Milford Sound Cruise A 2-hour cruise on the fiord. Waterfalls, dolphins, seals, and sheer cliff walls rising 1,200m from the water. Genuinely extraordinary — one of the world's great natural wonders.

Return: Back in Queenstown around 8–9pm. Simple dinner — you'll be tired.

---

Day 4: Glenorchy & Lord of the Rings

Morning: Drive to Glenorchy The 45-minute drive from Queenstown to Glenorchy along the lake is one of New Zealand's most spectacular drives. Stop at every layby.

Morning: Glenorchy and Paradise Glenorchy itself is tiny but beautiful. For LOTR fans, book a 4WD tour to Paradise (the filming location for Lothlórien and Isengard). Or simply walk to the Glenorchy Lagoon for free.

Afternoon: Dart River Jet Boat Book the Dart River Wilderness Jet — 35 minutes through the remote Dart Valley with LOTR commentary. Then 4WD return through Paradise Road.

Evening: Early night — you've earned it.

---

Day 5: Wanaka Day Trip

Morning: Drive the Crown Range The Crown Range road to Wanaka (NZ's highest sealed road) is spectacular. 1 hour from Queenstown via Cardrona.

Morning: Wanaka town The Wanaka Tree (iconic willow in the lake), lakefront walk, excellent coffee at Federal Diner. Wanaka is Queenstown's quieter, more relaxed sibling.

Afternoon: Roys Peak (advanced) or Mount Iron (easy) Roys Peak is a 4–6 hour hike with extraordinary views — the most Instagrammed mountain view in New Zealand. Mount Iron is 2 hours and more suitable for all fitness levels.

Evening: Dinner in Wanaka Dusk restaurant or Francesca's Italian Kitchen before the drive back.

---

Day 6: Wine & Relaxation

Morning: Gibbston Valley Wine Tour The Kawarau Gorge wine region is 25 minutes from Queenstown. Gibbston Valley Winery has the best cellar (carved into the cliff), and Amisfield has the best setting.

Book a wine tour or self-drive the gorge with stops at 2–3 wineries. Most offer tastings from $15–$25.

Afternoon: Lake Hayes Walk A gentle 8km loop around Lake Hayes — flat, beautiful, pastoral. Autumn colours in March–May are extraordinary.

Evening: Splurge dinner Your nicest dinner of the trip. Rata for tasting menu, or Botswana Butchery for a proper steak.

---

Day 7: Final Morning + Departure

Morning: Queenstown Hill Walk or Tiki Trail A final morning view from above. The Queenstown Hill Time Walk is 2–3 hours return. Or do the Tiki Trail (30 minutes up) if time is short.

Midday: Last lunch Steamer Wharf or the Queenstown waterfront. One more coffee with a lake view.

Afternoon: Airport Queenstown Airport is 15 minutes from town. Allow 2 hours before departure.
