Queenstown Accommodation Guide 2026: Where to Stay for Every Budget

From $35 hostel dorms to $4,000/night lodges — the honest guide to where to stay

21 March 2026 Queenstown

Queenstown has a huge range of accommodation — but it all costs more than most places in New Zealand. Knowing where to stay, which area to book in, and what to expect at each price point will save you significant money and frustration.

The Best Areas to Stay

Central Queenstown

Walking distance to the waterfront, restaurants, nightlife, and the gondola base. The most convenient location — and the most expensive.

Best for: First-timers, those without a car, couples wanting the full Queenstown experience Price premium: 20–40% more than equivalent accommodation elsewhere in town

Fernhill

A residential hillside suburb 5 minutes from central Queenstown by car. Quieter, with excellent lake and mountain views. Many self-contained apartments and houses.

Best for: Self-catering families, couples wanting views and quiet, longer stays Price: Moderate — often 15–25% cheaper than central for equivalent space

Frankton

A more spread-out suburb near the airport. 10 minutes from central Queenstown. Has its own shops, restaurants, and the Frankton beach/lagoon.

Best for: Budget travellers, those with a car, families wanting space Price: Queenstown's most affordable area. Budget motels and mid-range apartments.

Arrowtown

20 minutes from central Queenstown. A beautiful, quiet alternative base — especially for those primarily interested in wine country, cycling, or a more local experience. Has its own excellent restaurants.

Best for: Couples, wine lovers, those who want a quieter base Price: Moderate, often cheaper than equivalent central Queenstown options

Tips for Booking Queenstown Accommodation

Book early for peak seasons. Queenstown has two peak seasons — summer (December–February) and ski season (July). Accommodation books out weeks ahead. For July school holidays, book 2–3 months in advance.

Self-catering saves a lot. Eating out in Queenstown is expensive ($25–$50pp for dinner, $15–$25 for lunch). An apartment with a kitchen lets you cook breakfast and lunch, saving $40–$80 per day per person.

Frankton for budget, centre for convenience. If you have a car, Frankton accommodation can be 30–40% cheaper for equivalent quality.

Check cancellation policies. Queenstown weather can affect plans (especially ski season). Book somewhere with free cancellation where possible.

Avoid booking.com service fees. Book direct with the property where possible — you'll often get the same rate without the platform fee, and direct bookings sometimes include extras.

Arrowtown as a base. If you're doing wine touring and don't need central Queenstown at night, Arrowtown accommodation is often 20% cheaper and the town is genuinely lovely.
