In our view, three free days in Queenstown work best as three different settings rather than three versions of the same thing: one scenery day, one soft adventure day and one food and wine day. Inside each setting, choose the version the least confident person in your group will enjoy, not the boldest. Each operator sets its own age, height, weight and health rules, and prices are set by the operator and change, so read the exact listing for your date before you book. Four checks on the exact listing
- 01Check the entry rules for every person.
Age, height, weight and health rules differ by operator, and some can change on the day. Shotover Jet, for example, says it may extend its height minimum to 1.2 metres in rougher river conditions.
- 02Check health and pregnancy rules.
Shotover Jet and Ziptrek both say pregnant guests cannot take part, and Shotover Jet asks anyone with back or neck issues to contact it at least 48 hours before travel.
- 03Check the weather and refund terms.
Shotover Jet says it runs in light rain, may postpone or cancel for heavy rain or flooding, and then offers a full refund or a reschedule on direct bookings; if you booked through a third party, that seller's terms apply. The Canyon Swing says it operates in all weather and refunds when cancelled at least 24 hours ahead.

The Canyon Swing says about 2 hours and to allow 2.5. Shotover Jet's shuttle option takes about 1 hour 45 minutes for a 25-minute ride. Do not book a tight second activity after either.
05 / Safety
registered operators and your own limits
Destination Queenstown advises choosing an established operator, following all safety briefings and telling your guide about any medical conditions or concerns that could affect your activity. It also says registered adventure activity operators must undergo an independent safety audit and can be checked on the WorkSafe public register. In our view, if one person in the group is unsure, the right answer is a different activity or a spectator seat, not a pep talk.
