NIWA's 1991 to 2020 averages for Queenstown show about 96 wet days a year, meaning days with 1 mm or more of rain, and 721 mm of rain in total. May has the most wet days, at about 10, and February the fewest, at about 6.5. So most days are not wet, but every month averages at least six wet days. Your best guide is the forecast on the morning, not the monthly average. In our view, an anchor activity with a fallback beats a plan that depends on a clear sky.

Rain is not a reason to cancel Milford Sound
Southern Discoveries says Milford Sound boat trips are often even more dramatic in the rain, when hundreds of temporary waterfalls appear, and that all its vessels have indoor seating. It also says Milford Sound receives about 7 metres of rain a year. The drive is a different question. DOC says road conditions on the Milford Road can change because of weather, rockfalls, avalanches and maintenance, and asks you to check the latest road status before you leave. Opening times, sessions and exhibitions change. Check the operator's page the same morning.
- Book the anchor
Onsen says its website is a live system and lists availability to 31 March 2027. Book the hot pools before the rest of the day.
- Keep it close
In our view, a day that stays in one area copes better with rain than one that jumps between venues.
- Carry the basics
A waterproof jacket, a dry layer and a charged phone for forecasts and bookings are enough for most wet days.
