DOC lists public toilets at Te Anau, Knobs Flat and Milford Sound, and says facilities at Milford Sound are limited. milford-sound.co.nz notes that many visitors stay the night in Te Anau rather than attempt the return in one day. DOC says Milford Road traffic and parking are often busiest between 9.30 am and 1.30 pm, that the journey is busiest in summer between October and April, and that arriving after 1.30 pm avoids the crowds. In winter DOC advises leaving later in the morning, from 9 am onwards. The cruise is only one part of the day: the road, stops, parking and terminal walk come before it and the return follows. If the schedule would pressure a tired driver, changing the plan is the responsible decision.
