- 4In our view, a car earns its place only if you want to self-drive beyond the bus network. For Milford Sound, the Department of Conservation gives about 4.5 hours each way from Queenstown without stops, and RealNZ says many of its guests prefer its coach and cruise to driving.

Yes, you can get around Queenstown without a car
Destination Queenstown says getting around Queenstown is easy by public bus, on foot, by bike on the Queenstown Trail or by hiring a car, with a ferry as a scenic extra. It describes the downtown as compact, so many restaurants, attractions and accommodation are within walking distance of each other. It also says many local activity operators offer free transport from the town centre and hotels. In our view, the choice of base matters more than the transport: stay in or near the downtown or on a bus route, and the car becomes optional. Fares below are from the Otago Regional Council and the ferry operator, read on 31 October 2026, and they are set by those operators.

From the terminal to the door, without a car
- 01Pick the airport option
The airport lists the Orbus public bus, taxis and Uber, and pre-booked shuttles. Bus stops are outside the terminal, and buses generally run every 15 minutes during the day, with evening services typically every 30 minutes.
- 02Sort the Bee Card
A Bee Card costs NZ$5 plus a minimum NZ$5 top-up. The airport says you can buy one online, and recommends doing so in advance if you arrive on one of the last flights of the day. Ferry Bee Card top-ups are available at the Queenstown Bay kiosk and Hilton reception.
- 03Check the bags
Otago Regional Council says suitcases are carried only if there is room, at the driver's discretion. The ferry operator says you carry your own luggage, and recommends one item each.

Hire one only if the plan needs it
Destination Queenstown notes that rental car outlets operate at the airport, and that campervans and EVs can be hired. In our view, a car is worth the cost if you want to move between several places on your own timing, travel with a lot of equipment, or stay outside the bus network. If your plan is the town, a few activities and one or two tours that collect you, you can skip it and put the money into the tours instead. Check the Milford Road and weather before any self-drive to Fiordland.
