About 20 minutes, and four sensible ways to do it
Queenstown Airport's homepage lists 20 minutes to downtown Queenstown. Its transport pages cover the Orbus public bus, taxis and Uber, and shuttles and VIP transfers, and its car rentals page covers hire cars. In our view, choose on cost and timing. The bus is the lowest-cost option and suits travellers carrying little. A taxi or Uber is direct and handles luggage. A pre-booked shuttle gives you a pre-arranged, door-to-door transfer. In our view, a rental car is worth it only if the rest of your trip needs one. Wherever you stay, have the full address saved before you leave the terminal.

From the baggage belt to the right pick-up
- 01Collect your bags
Domestic arrivals collect from bag claim one or two. International arrivals clear biosecurity first, then reach Bag Claim, where screens show the carousel for your flight. Then follow the signs for your chosen option: the airport says to find it inside the terminal or exit for taxis, rideshare and the public bus.
- 02Find the pick-up
Bus stops are outside the terminal and signposted. Taxi ranks and rideshare pick-up zones are also close to the terminal and signposted. The airport warns of longer waits during busy periods.
- 03Arriving before check-in?

Going straight to Wānaka or the ski fields
The airport's homepage lists about an hour to Lake Wānaka and 30 minutes to the nearest ski field. The airport also lists SkyDrive, operated by Ritchies Transport, which runs shuttles between Queenstown and Wānaka four times a day, with stops at Queenstown Airport, Frankton, Cardrona, Cromwell and Luggate. 06 / Flying out
Leaving with the airline advice in front of you
For departures, Queenstown Airport says to check your airline's recommended arrival time, allow extra time in peak periods, and arrive earlier if you need assistance or are travelling with children. It does not set one interval for every flight. Count the whole chain: the ride to the terminal, check-in and bag drop, screening and boarding. The terminal is open daily from 04:00 to 22:30 and passengers may not stay overnight when it is closed. Your departure transport may differ from your arrival one, so plan it separately.
