The drive between Queenstown and Wanaka is one of those happy problems: both roads are good, and both are worth doing. The decision comes down to season, confidence and how much time you have.

Option one: the Crown Range
The headline route. At 70 km taking about an hour, the Crown Range is New Zealand's highest sealed road, climbing out of the Wakatipu basin in a series of switchbacks with enormous views back over the valley, then running the high country to Cardrona and down into Wanaka.
It is the shorter and more spectacular option, and in good conditions it is simply one of the country's great drives. The zigzag climb rewards a stop at the lookout, and the run through the Cardrona Valley is big-sky country all the way.
Two things to know. First, winter: from May to October you should carry snow chains, and ice is possible any cold morning. The road is alpine and behaves like it. Second, the climb involves genuine hairpins: confident drivers will love it, nervous drivers may prefer the alternative.

Option two: via Cromwell
The gentler road follows State Highway 6 through the Kawarau Gorge to Cromwell, then up the shore of Lake Dunstan to Wanaka. It is longer in distance and time, but it stays lower, avoids the alpine switchbacks, and holds up better in rough winter weather.
This is the route for towing, for icy mornings, for anyone who would rather not meet a hairpin, and for travellers who want to stop in wine country or Cromwell's fruit stalls on the way through.

Making a day of it
Our favourite shape, drawn from our 10-day itinerary: morning in Arrowtown, over the Crown Range with the lookout stop, lunch in Wanaka, the lakefront and That Wanaka Tree in the afternoon, then home via Cromwell to make it a loop. You see both roads, and the loop means no backtracking.

More stops if you have time
The Cromwell route earns its keep with detours the high road cannot offer. The Kawarau Gorge section passes directly through Gibbston, Queenstown's wine country, where cellar doors line the highway and a tasting stop turns the drive into an outing. The same stretch holds the Kawarau Bridge, the world's first commercial bungy site: watch jumpers from the free viewing platform, send a brave passenger off the 43 metre original for $220, or let kids ride the Zipride from $30. A note on fuel and timing: fill up before you leave, in Queenstown or Frankton heading out, or Wanaka coming home, and treat the hour-long Crown Range crossing as scenery time rather than a race. The lookout stop alone rewards ten unhurried minutes, and the zigzag rewards patience behind slower vehicles: passing opportunities come.
