Queenstown or Wānaka
In our view, Queenstown is the stronger base for a first visit, the airport and Milford Sound, while Wānaka suits a slower trip built around the lake and walking. Because the drive is short, many visitors base in one town and day trip to the other. Our comparison guide sets the two side by side.
