Queenstown 10 Day Itinerary: The Deep South, Done Properly

Ten days is the sweet spot for Queenstown. Three days covers the essentials and five days breathes, but ten days lets you do the thing most visitors regret missing: go deep instead of wide. You get the adventure capital, Milford Sound without rushing, the wine country, the small towns, and still have room for the unplanned day that usually turns out to be the favourite.

This itinerary assumes Queenstown as your base with two nights away. Swap days freely; the structure matters more than the order.

Day 1: Arrive and settle in

Land, drop your bags, and walk the lakefront into town. Ride the Skyline Gondola for the orientation view, then dinner in the centre. Nothing ambitious: jet lag and Queenstown do not mix well. Our airport guide covers the 7km hop into town.

Day 2: Adventure day

The classic Queenstown day. Pick your thrill: the Kawarau Bridge bungy (where commercial bungy was born in 1988), the Shotover Jet through the canyon, or a skydive or paraglide over the lake. Two activities fit comfortably in a day; our adventure combos guide shows where bundling saves money.

Day 3: Arrowtown and wine country

Arrowtown is 21km away, a 20 minute drive: gold-rush streets, galleries and cafes that deserve a slow morning. Spend the afternoon in the Gibbston Valley next door, the closest of Central Otago's wine sub-regions, where cellar doors pour some of the world's best Pinot Noir. Day 4: Milford Sound

The eighth wonder deserves a whole day: it is 296km each way, and the coach day trip runs 12 to 13 hours including the 2 hour cruise. Day 5: Recovery day in town

The day everyone under-plans for and always needs after the Milford round trip. Sleep in, browse the town, swim at the lake in summer, or take the gondola luge. If the energy is there, the hidden gems guide fills an afternoon beautifully.

Day 6: Glenorchy and the head of the lake

Forty five minutes along one of New Zealand's most beautiful lakeside roads to tiny Glenorchy, gateway to Paradise and the landscapes Peter Jackson used for Lothlorien and Isengard. Day 7: Wanaka

Over the Crown Range (70km, about an hour, New Zealand's highest sealed road) to Queenstown's quieter sibling. See That Wanaka Tree, walk the lakefront, and if you are fit, Roys Peak is the most photographed viewpoint in the country (16km return, a serious climb). Days 8 and 9: Te Anau and Doubtful Sound (overnight away)

Here is what ten days buys you that seven cannot: Fiordland twice. Drive 2 hours to lakeside Te Anau, visit the glowworm caves (book ahead), and stay the night. Next morning, take the Doubtful Sound day tour: a boat across Lake Manapouri, a bus over Wilmot Pass, then 4 to 5 hours on a fiord three times longer than Milford with a twentieth of the visitors. Day 10: Final morning

A lakefront breakfast, last-minute gifts, and the airport 90 minutes before a domestic flight or 2 hours before an international one. If your flight is late, Arrowtown makes a perfect final half-day at 20 minutes from town.
