Te Anau is the town on the edge of Fiordland National Park and the usual base for Fiordland tours. Milford Sound coach and cruise tours start here, Doubtful Sound trips leave from Manapouri about 20 minutes away, and glowworm cave trips cross Lake Te Anau. Fiordland's official visitor site puts Queenstown about 170 km away.

Why base yourself in Te Anau
Fiordland's official visitor site calls Te Anau the basecamp for Fiordland National Park, Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound, and the place to begin a self-drive or coach and cruise tour to Milford Sound. The town sits on the shore of the South Island's largest lake and has a full range of shops and places to stay. In our view, a night here turns a very long Milford Sound day into a manageable one.

Things to do in Te Anau
Fiordland's official site lists lake cruises, glowworm cave tours, jet boating, fishing and scenic flights, plus Punanga Manu o Te Anau, the bird sanctuary where you may see the rare takahē. The glowworm trip crosses the lake to the caves, where RealNZ guides lead you through limestone passages to a grotto you drift through by boat. Three of New Zealand's Great Walks are close by: the Milford, Kepler and Routeburn tracks. DOC says the Kepler Track is a 60 km loop of 3 to 4 days, starting from a car park 5 km from town and following the lakeshore to Brod Bay.

Getting there and around
Fiordland's official site gives about 170 km from Queenstown via State Highways 6 and 94. From Te Anau, the Milford Road runs to Milford Sound. DOC gives two figures for the drive: 120 km and at least 2 hours 15 minutes without stops in its highway guide, and 119 km and about 2.5 hours on its journey tips page. The highway guide warns there is no fuel on the 240 km return trip. Check the road status before you leave, and call at Te Rua-o-te-moko/Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre, 1 Lakefront Drive, for track and weather advice.

When to go
Fiordland's official site says spring (September to November) brings more wind and rain, summer (December to February) has the warmest weather and long daylight hours, and winter (June to August) is surprisingly the most settled time of year, with snow on the mountains. DOC says the Kepler Track's Great Walks season runs from 27 October 2026 to 30 April 2027, when huts and campsites must be booked.

Doubtful Sound from here
Doubtful Sound has no direct road access. DOC says the easiest way in is a boat from Pearl Harbour in Manapouri across the lake to West Arm, then a coach over Wilmot Pass to Deep Cove, booked in advance with a local operator. Manapouri is 21 km and about 20 minutes' drive from Te Anau, so Te Anau works as a base for both fiords.
