Queenstown Airport Guide: Arrivals, Transfers & Getting Into Town

Everything you need to know about Queenstown Airport — from landing to checking in

16 March 2026 Queenstown

Queenstown Airport (ZQN) handles about 2.5 million passengers per year — surprisingly large for a town of 40,000 — and processes arrivals with reasonable efficiency. It's small enough to navigate without stress but busy enough in peak season to require planning.

Airlines Flying to Queenstown

Domestic (from main NZ cities): - Air New Zealand — multiple daily flights from Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch - Jetstar — Auckland and Christchurch

International: - Air New Zealand — direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane (seasonal) - Jetstar — Sydney, Melbourne, Gold Coast (seasonal) - Various seasonal charters from Australia

Note: Most international visitors fly to Auckland or Christchurch first and connect. Queenstown international capacity is limited by runway length (the airport is hemmed in by mountains and Lake Wakatipu).

Arrivals

The airport is compact — you'll be through immigration and at the baggage carousel within 15-20 minutes of touchdown. The main terminal has car hire desks, an ATM, a café, and basic retail.

Baggage claim is a single carousel. Domestic and international bags come through the same area.

No visa on arrival for most Western passport holders visiting New Zealand. Check NZ Immigration for current requirements. Australian and British citizens have specific arrangements.

NZeTA: If you're visiting from a country that requires a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA), apply before you travel — not at the airport.

Getting from Queenstown Airport to Town

The airport is about 7km from central Queenstown via SH6A. Several options:

Shuttle ($25-30 per person) Shared shuttles run every 15-30 minutes from the terminal. Door-to-door to your accommodation. Book online in advance (Super Shuttle, Connectabus) or get in the queue outside arrivals. Fastest and most common option for solo travellers.

Taxi / Rideshare ($25-40) Taxis queue outside arrivals. Uber operates in Queenstown — check the app on arrival. Fixed price to central Queenstown, roughly NZD $30-40.

Rental Car All major operators (Hertz, Avis, Budget, Go Rentals, Ezi Car Rental) have desks in the terminal. Collection is easy; the drive to town takes 15 minutes. Essential if you're planning day trips to Milford Sound, Wanaka, or ski fields.

Bus ($3) The Connectabus 1 runs from the airport to central Queenstown every 30 minutes during the day. It takes about 20-25 minutes and drops at the town centre. Cheapest option but limited luggage space and stops running by 10pm.

Airport Facilities

Pre-departure: - Café/restaurant in the terminal (quality is fine, prices are airport prices) - Duty-free — limited selection but includes NZ wine, Mānuka honey, and spirits - ATM available airside - Free WiFi throughout

Car parking: - Short-stay (P1) — $4 per hour, max $32/day. 5-minute walk to terminal. - Long-stay (P2) — Cheaper daily rates, 10-minute walk. - Frankton Road side streets — free street parking a 10-minute walk from terminal (popular with locals dropping off). Check signs carefully.

Departure Tips

  • Arrive 90 minutes before domestic flights, 2 hours for international. Security queues can be slow during peak departures.
  • Car hire returns — All operators are at the terminal or a short shuttle ride away. Return before your stated time to avoid extra charges.
  • Queenstown's weather. Fog and low cloud can delay or divert flights. Mountain landing approaches are technical. Delays are more common than at larger flat airports. Build buffer into connections.

Nearby Airport Amenities

The Remarkables Park shopping centre is 5 minutes from the airport on SH6. It has a supermarket (Countdown), pharmacy, and several restaurants — useful for last-minute supplies or a meal while waiting.
