Queenstown Honeymoon Guide: Romance at the Adventure Capital

Adventure, luxury, and extraordinary scenery — Queenstown is one of the world's great honeymoon destinations

5 March 2026 Queenstown

Queenstown might not be the first destination that comes to mind for a honeymoon — adventure capital, bungy jumping, backpacker bars — but it's one of New Zealand's best-kept romantic secrets. The combination of jaw-dropping scenery, exceptional food and wine, intimate luxury hotels, and the option for memorable shared adventure makes it a perfect honeymoon destination.

When to Go

Autumn (March–May) is widely considered the most romantic time. The surrounding hills blaze with colour — golds, reds, and oranges — the crowds thin out, and the light is golden and warm. Temperatures are mild. Arrowtown in April is one of New Zealand's most beautiful autumn scenes.

Summer (December–February) has the longest days (light until 10pm) and warmest weather, but also the biggest crowds and highest prices.

Winter (June–August) is surprisingly romantic — cosy firesides, skiing, and less crowded restaurants. The mountain backdrop is dramatic under snow.

Where to Stay

Eichardt's Private Hotel — The gold standard. Six suites and a penthouse on the waterfront, with a fireplace bar downstairs that's perfect for evening drinks. Service is impeccable and the lake views from the suites are extraordinary. Book the Lake Suite for views from the bath.

Matakauri Lodge — 12km from town on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, Matakauri is one of New Zealand's finest lodges. The Lakeview Suite has a private deck above the lake. Breakfast included, spa on-site. The definition of a luxury honeymoon experience.

The Rees Hotel — Boutique hotel on the lake with spacious apartments and hotel rooms. More accessible price point than Matakauri but still genuinely luxurious.

Azur Lodge — Nine private villas perched above the lake with private hot tubs on each deck. Completely private, spectacular views.

Romantic Experiences

Helicopter & Alpine Picnic Take a scenic helicopter flight over the fiords, glaciers, or Remarkables and land in a remote alpine setting for a private picnic with Champagne. Multiple operators run this experience. It's expensive (NZD $600-1200 per couple) and absolutely worth it.

Private Milford Sound Cruise Rather than a group coach tour, private tours to Milford Sound are available — charter a smaller vessel or upgrade to a premium small-group overnight cruise on the Fiordland Navigator. Sleeping in the fiord overnight with no road noise and million-star skies is something else.

Wine & Dine at Amisfield Drive 20 minutes to Amisfield Winery near Arrowtown for the 'Trust the Chef' lunch — matched Pinot Noir with seasonal courses in a stunning vineyard setting. One of the South Island's finest food experiences.

Onsen Hot Pools Private outdoor hot tubs in the hills above Queenstown, looking out over the Shotover River canyon. Available as 1-hour private bookings. Bring Champagne (they allow it). Perfect for a romantic evening.

Kayaking on Lake Wakatipu A guided sunset kayak on the lake — the mountains reflected in the water, the evening light golden, complete quiet. Utterly beautiful. Several operators offer this.

Stargazing Queenstown is close enough to the Mackenzie's dark sky reserve for excellent stargazing on clear nights. Earth & Sky run tours from Lake Tekapo (90 minutes away). Or simply drive to Moke Lake, lay on the bonnet of your car, and look up.

Romantic Dining

Rata — Josh Emett's flagship. The best table in town for a special occasion. Book the corner booth if possible.

The Bunker — Intimate, candlelit, underground. Perfect for a long evening.

Botswana Butchery — Riverside setting, beautiful fit-out, excellent steaks and lamb.

Eichardt's Bar — Not dinner, but the fireplace bar with a glass of Central Otago Pinot is one of the most romantic spots in New Zealand. Go at 5pm before it fills.

Adventure Together

Sharing an adrenaline experience creates a genuine bond. The tandem skydive is the classic honeymoon adventure — jumping out of a plane over Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables, freefalling together. The Nevis Swing (Australia/NZ's highest swing) is another unforgettable shared experience.

Practical Tips

  • Book 3-6 months ahead for summer/autumn. Eichardt's and Matakauri fill fast.
  • Rent a car. The freedom to drive to secluded lake spots and through autumn colour is worth it.
  • Allow 4-6 nights minimum. You'll want to go deep, not rush.
