Best Instagram Spots in Queenstown 2026 (With Exact Locations)

The most photogenic places in Queenstown — from the obvious to the hidden

21 March 2026 Queenstown

Queenstown is spectacularly photogenic — dramatic mountain backdrops, a stunning lake, and golden light that photographers dream about. Here are the best spots, with exact locations and timing tips.

1. Queenstown Hill Summit

What you get: 360-degree panorama of Lake Wakatipu, The Remarkables, Cecil Peak, and the town below. The 'Basket of Dreams' sculpture is a perfect foreground subject.

Best time: Sunrise (extraordinary golden light on the lake) or the hour before sunset Getting there: Drive to the top of Edinburgh Drive or walk the Time Walk track from town (2–3 hours return) Instagram tip: Shoot from the sculpture looking back toward the Remarkables for the classic shot

---

2. Bob's Peak / Skyline Gondola

What you get: The most famous Queenstown view — the lake, town, and mountain panorama from 400m above. The gondola infrastructure gives you a human scale element.

Best time: Late afternoon / golden hour. The view at night (Queenstown lit up below) is also extraordinary. Getting there: Skyline Gondola ($40) or Tiki Trail hike (free, 30–45 min) Instagram tip: The restaurant terrace has a glass barrier that gives an unobstructed view. Arrive at opening for empty space.

---

3. Glenorchy Lagoon

What you get: Calm water reflections of Mount Earnslaw and the surrounding peaks. When the lagoon is still (usually morning), the reflections are perfect mirror images.

Best time: Early morning — pre-9am for calm water and soft light. The lagoon is often glass-smooth before the breeze picks up. Getting there: 45-minute drive from Queenstown along the Glenorchy Road. The lagoon is a 5-minute walk from the Glenorchy town centre. Free. Instagram tip: The classic shot is from the bridge at the lagoon entrance, looking toward Mount Earnslaw

---

4. The Wanaka Tree (Lake Wanaka)

What you get: A lone willow tree growing from the edge of Lake Wanaka with mountains behind. Possibly the most photographed tree in New Zealand.

Best time: Morning (calm water reflections), golden hour, or blue hour after sunset Getting there: 1 hour from Queenstown via Crown Range road. The tree is right on the Wanaka waterfront. Instagram tip: Get there early — it's very crowded by 9am on clear days. The pre-sunrise blue hour is the least crowded and gives beautiful colours.

---

5. Lake Hayes

What you get: Mirror-still lake with the Remarkables reflected in the water. Especially beautiful in autumn (April–May) with coloured trees.

Best time: Early morning — the lake is usually still before 8am. Autumn is peak season. Getting there: 20 minutes from Queenstown on the Arrowtown road. Free car park at the lakeside. Instagram tip: Shoot from the eastern end of the lake looking west toward the mountains for the best composition.

---

6. Kawarau Bridge (Bungy)

What you get: The world-famous bungy bridge over the Kawarau River gorge. Turquoise water, dramatic rock walls, and the bridge itself.

Best time: Midday for the most colour in the water (the turquoise is best in full sun). Morning has good soft light but the water colour is less intense. Getting there: 25 minutes from Queenstown on SH6. Free viewing platform. Instagram tip: The free viewing platform gives excellent angles of both the bridge and the gorge. You don't need to do the bungy to get great shots.

---

7. Roys Peak, Wanaka

What you get: The most famous mountain viewpoint in New Zealand. Lake Wanaka from above, with Mount Aspiring visible on clear days. The classic shot is from the rocky saddle partway up the ridge.

Best time: Sunrise (requires hiking in the dark — bring a headtorch). Clear days only. Getting there: 1 hour to Wanaka, then the Roys Peak trailhead is 5km from town. 5–6 hour hike return. Track open October–April only. Instagram tip: The famous photo spot is at a rocky outcrop about 2/3 of the way up — not the true summit. You'll see the crowds around it.

---

8. The Remarkables at Sunset

What you get: The Remarkables mountain range lit up in orange and red at sunset, reflected in Lake Wakatipu.

Best time: 30–60 minutes before sunset. The mountains catch the alpenglow when the sun drops below the horizon. Getting there: Anywhere on the Queenstown lakefront — the waterfront promenade, Steamer Wharf, or Queenstown Bay beach all give excellent angles. Instagram tip: A wide-angle shot capturing the full length of the range reflected in the lake works better than a telephoto zoom.

---

9. Arrowtown in Autumn

What you get: Buckingham Street lined with golden and red trees — one of the most classic New Zealand autumn images.

Best time: Mid-to-late April (peak colour). Early morning for empty streets. Getting there: 20 minutes from Queenstown. Free. Instagram tip: Shoot down the middle of Buckingham Street with the tree canopy overhead. Best before 8am when the shops are closed and the street is empty.

---

10. Mitre Peak, Milford Sound

What you get: The iconic 1,692m peak rising from the fiord, reflected in calm water. The most dramatic landscape photo in New Zealand.

Best time: Morning — the fiord is often calm and misty before 10am. Afternoon wind can disturb the water surface. Getting there: Day trip from Queenstown (4.5 hours drive) — the cruise boat takes you to the best viewing positions. Instagram tip: The best shots of Mitre Peak are from the cruise boat, not the wharf. Book a cruise.
