Queenstown one-way rides: plan the return

Ride one way, with the way back already sorted

Choose a Queenstown Trails ride by distance and grade, then line up the bus, shuttle or ride back before you pick up a bike.

Read guide Planning guideCheck sources before travel
The short versionStart here
  1. 1Choose the return before the route. Queenstown Trails lists operators that offer bike hire with trail transport, and the Otago Regional Council says Orbus buses carry bikes on a rack, free, subject to space.
  2. 2Orbus Ferries does not take bikes, according to its own FAQ, so a ride that ends at the lake cannot be reversed by ferry with your bike.
  3. 3Queenstown Trails gives distances and times for each trail: for example 13.3 km and 2 to 3 hours by bike on the Arrow River Bridges Trail (partial closure listed at Swain Bridge on 31 October 2026), and 13 km one way and 1.5 to 2 hours on the Wharehuanui Trail.
  4. 4In our view, book any shuttle first and the ride second, and ask the operator about one-way drop-off, bike carriage and the last pick-up, because we found none of those terms on the pages we read.

01 / Short answer

Choose the way back before you choose the way out

A one-way ride needs three things to line up: where you pick up a bike, where you finish and how you get back. Queenstown Trails lists bike hire and trail transport operators on its Transport and Bike Hire page, and several describe shuttles in their own words. The Otago Regional Council says Orbus buses have bike racks and that your bike travels free. In our view, the simplest plan is a ride that ends at a bus stop on a route you have checked, or at a pick-up you have booked. Shorter loops avoid the question altogether. The detail below comes from Queenstown Trails, the Otago Regional Council and the operators' own pages, read on 31 October 2026.

02 / The rides

Five one-way rides and what Queenstown Trails says

RideWhat Queenstown Trails saysReturn thought (our view)
Arrowtown to GibbstonArrow River Bridges Trail: 13.3 km, 2 to 3 hours by bike, graded easy, starting in Arrowtown and crossing five bridges to the Kawarau Suspension Bridge. The Gibbston River Trail then adds 8.7 km, 1 to 2 hours, graded easy. Queenstown Trails listed a partial closure at Swain Bridge, with a detour, when we read its status page on 31 October 2026.Arrowtown Bike Hire says it runs a daily bike shuttle from the Gibbston Valley. Confirm the day and time with it.
Arthurs Point to ArrowtownWharehuanui Trail: 13 km one way, 1.5 to 2 hours by bike, graded easy. Queenstown Trails gives 16.5 km for the full Arthurs Point to Arrowtown ride including the Countryside Trail section.Check which Orbus route and stop suits your finish, and whether the rack has space.
Arrowtown to the Old Lower Shotover BridgeCountryside Trail: 12.8 km, 1.5 to 3 hours by bike, graded intermediate, with steep sections at Sharp Rise and over Slope Hill. Queenstown Trails noted scour repairs still to be completed (read 31 October 2026).The trail does not end at a bus hub. Orbus route 2 links Frankton Hub and Arrowtown, so plan how you reach a route 2 stop, or book a pick-up. Times are approximate.
Shotover Gorge, from Arthurs PointShotover Gorge Trail: 6 km one way, 0.5 to 1 hour by bike, graded intermediate, through the 108 metre Hugo Tunnel. It has a steep, narrow climb with grade 4 corners, and a tunnel bypass. Queenstown Trails noted sections of scour still to be repaired (read 31 October 2026).Plan the pick-up at the Tucker Beach end with your operator, or ride back.
Queenstown Gardens to FranktonFrankton Track: 8.5 km, 0.5 to 1 hour by bike, graded easy. A detour via the sealed footpath beside Frankton Road is in place throughout 2026.Orbus Ferries does not take bikes. Use a bus with a rack, or ride back.

03 / Plan the return

Four steps before you pick up a bike

  1. 01Pick your finish

Choose where the ride ends first, then work backwards. Queenstown Trails grades trails from easy to advanced, and says to match the grade to the least experienced rider in a group. It also says wet or loose trails can raise the effective grade.

  2. 02Pick the return

Choose a bus with a bike rack, an operator shuttle or a ride back. Ask any operator about one-way drop-off, bike carriage, the last pick-up and what happens if you are late.

  3. 03Check the trail

Queenstown Trails publishes trail status and alerts, and says most sections stay open all year but that wet weather and challenging conditions call for sensible decisions. Check the page on the day.

  4. 04Keep a backup

Save the operator's contact details and note where the nearest bus stop is. In our view, a ride that ends where a bus with a rack passes is more forgiving than one that depends on a single booked pick-up.

04 / Getting back

The return options and what the sources say

Details come from the Otago Regional Council, Queenstown Trails and the operators' own pages, read on 31 October 2026.

Bus

Orbus with a bike rack

The Otago Regional Council says bikes can go on the rack subject to space and travel free. It says the racks suit wheels larger than 16 inches, and gives their capacity as two bikes, or three in Queenstown, so do not count on a space. It also says no bike may weigh more than 25 kg including e-bikes, and that you load and unload the bike yourself because drivers cannot assist. It lists Queenstown routes 1 to 5, with route 2 between Frankton Hub and Arrowtown and route 4 between Jacks Point and Arrowtown via Queenstown.

Shuttle

Operator shuttles

Queenstown Trails lists operators offering trail transport, including Arrowtown Bike Hire and Queenstown Bike Hire. Queenstown Bike Hire's own site says shuttle seats are limited and to book ahead, and that its shuttle operates on demand seven days a week. Arrowtown Bike Hire says it runs a daily bike shuttle from the Gibbston Valley. Queenstown Trails' listing for another operator, nzbiketrails, describes a self-guided ride between Kinross and Arthurs Point.

Water

Orbus Ferries do not take bikes

Orbus Ferries runs between Queenstown Bay and Frankton Marina, and its FAQ answers the question about bikes with no, because its vessels have limited room. Do not plan to ride one way along the lake and return by ferry with a bike.

Not open yet?

Kawarau Gorge Trail

Queenstown Trails' pages give different dates for the Kawarau Gorge Trail: one says September 2026, its trail list says expected 25 October 2026 (read 31 October 2026). Arrowtown Bike Hire's site says the opening date has been postponed, with the date to be confirmed. We could not confirm that it is open, so do not plan a one-way ride on it until Queenstown Trails does.

05 / On the trail

Share the path, and keep the loops in mind

Queenstown Trails describes a shared-use network and asks riders to give a friendly warning when overtaking, slow down when approaching others and give way to pedestrians. It notes the Arrow River Bridges Trail can be busy with pedestrians closer to Arrowtown. If a one-way return looks complicated, a loop such as the Waiwhakaata Lake Hayes Trail (8 km, graded intermediate) avoids it. Queenstown Trails listed a partial closure there, with the northern bridge closed, when we read its status page on 31 October 2026, so check it first. Our short walks guide covers the same closure. For a car-free stay, our guide to Queenstown without a car covers the bus network, and our wine tours guide covers the Gibbston end.
