Te Anau Travel Guide: Gateway to Fiordland

The small town with the most extraordinary backyard in New Zealand

17 February 2026 Te anau

Te Anau (population ~3,500) sits quietly on the shores of Lake Te Anau — New Zealand's largest South Island lake — and acts as the jumping-off point for some of the world's most extraordinary wilderness. Most visitors pass through on their way to Milford Sound, but Te Anau deserves more than a fuel stop.

Getting There

Te Anau is a 2-hour drive from Queenstown via State Highway 6 through Kingston and Lumsden, or via Mossburn. The road is well-maintained and passes through dramatic high-country landscape. There's no train service; driving or a tour bus from Queenstown are the main options.

What to Do in Te Anau

Milford Sound Day Trip This is why most people come. The 120km drive from Te Anau to Milford Sound is one of the most spectacular roads in the world — through beech forest, past glacial lakes, and through the Homer Tunnel into the fiord. Depart early morning (before 8am) to beat the crowds and catch the best light on the water.

See our dedicated Milford Sound guide for what to do once you're there.

Te Anau Glowworm Caves An underground boat ride through a cave system lit entirely by thousands of native glowworms. The experience is genuinely magical — complete silence, and a ceiling that looks like a starfield. Access is by guided tour only (Real Journeys operate them). Book well in advance; it sells out.

Kepler Track One of New Zealand's nine Great Walks, the Kepler Track starts right from Te Anau township. The full 60km circuit takes 3-4 days but the first section to Luxmore Hut (16km return) can be done as a challenging day hike with extraordinary views over Lake Te Anau and into Fiordland.

Doubtful Sound Often overshadowed by Milford, Doubtful Sound is actually deeper, more remote, and arguably more impressive. The day trip from Te Anau involves a scenic boat crossing of Lake Manapouri, a bus over Wilmot Pass, then a cruise on the sound. It's a long day (8-9 hours) but utterly unforgettable. Maximum 80 passengers on the boat versus Milford's hundreds.

Lake Manapouri A short drive from Te Anau, Lake Manapouri is arguably the most beautiful lake in New Zealand. The Waiau Cruises offer scenic tours on the lake. It's also the starting point for Doubtful Sound trips.

Wildlife Watching Te Anau is one of the best places in New Zealand to see takahe — a large, flightless bird once thought extinct. The DOC Wildlife Centre in town has a small breeding programme. Kea (alpine parrots) are commonly seen on the Homer Tunnel road. In the lake itself, look for great crested grebes.

Where to Stay

Te Anau has a good range of accommodation: lakefront hotels (Fiordland Hotel has excellent views), several motels along the main street, holiday parks, and a number of B&Bs. Book well ahead for summer (December–March) and July school holidays.

Where to Eat

The Sandfly Café — Named after Fiordland's most annoying residents, this café is a local institution for breakfast and lunch. The pies are excellent.

Redcliff Restaurant — Housed in a heritage building, the best evening meal in town. Local venison, lamb, and fresh fish. Book ahead in summer.

Miles Better Pies — Self-explanatory. Worth queuing for.

Best Time to Visit

Te Anau is at its best from October through April. Summer (December–February) brings long daylight hours and the warmest temperatures but also the most visitors. Spring and autumn offer better value and fewer crowds. Milford Sound is often wetter in summer (though rain actually makes the waterfalls more dramatic).

Winter (June–August) sees snow at altitude and some road closures to Milford in heavy snowfall — check conditions before driving.

Te Anau as a Base

Many travellers use Te Anau as a 2-3 night base for exploring Fiordland. From here you can do Milford Sound (Day 1), Doubtful Sound (Day 2), and a Kepler Track day hike (Day 3) before heading back to Queenstown or continuing south to Invercargill.
