The short versionStart here
  1. 1Plan Wānaka by the kind of day you want: a lake day, a walking day, an adventure day, or a slower rainy or family day. Winter adds Cardrona, Treble Cone and Snow Farm.
  2. 2For walkers, the Department of Conservation (DOC) gives Mount Iron as a 4.5 km loop of about 1 hour 30 minutes, and Roys Peak as a 5 to 6 hour return climb to 1,578 m that is closed for lambing from 1 October to 10 November.
  3. 3Wānaka works as a day trip from Queenstown: Lake Wānaka Tourism gives about 1 hour by the Crown Range, and Destination Queenstown 70 to 80 minutes on its scenic drives page. Our drive guide covers the roads, other official times and winter chains.
  4. 4In our view, a day trip fits the lakefront, one booked activity and a short walk. Stay a night if you want Roys Peak or an early start on the lake.

01 / Short answer

Pick the kind of day first, then one thing to anchor it

Lake Wānaka Tourism describes a town between the Southern Alps and two lakes, Wānaka and Hāwea, and says the area has over 750 km of tracks and trails. Its outdoor adventures page lists skydiving from 15,000 feet, the world's highest waterfall via ferrata, canyons, four wheel driving and quad biking. Destination Queenstown adds that wine tasting, a puzzling attraction and classic warplanes are popular all year. In our view, the easiest way to plan is to choose one kind of day, book the one activity that needs a booking, and fill the rest with the lakefront and a walk. Time on the lake itself (kayaks, the Mou Waho water taxi and island walks) has its own guide.

03 / Walks

Three walks, from easy to a full day

Track details come from DOC, Lake Wānaka Tourism and Destination Queenstown, read on 31 October 2026.

Lakefront

Eely Point and Waterfall Creek

Destination Queenstown suggests heading to the lakefront when you arrive, naming the Eely Point track as a gentle 1 km stroll and the 2.5 km Waterfall Creek track, which passes the Wānaka willow tree and Rippon Vineyard.

Short climb

Mount Iron

DOC describes a 4.5 km loop of about 1 hour 30 minutes, graded easy to intermediate, from a car park off SH84 about 2 km from town. The knoll rises nearly 250 m, with 360 degree views of Lake Wānaka and the Southern Alps. DOC says the surface is loose rock in parts, dogs must be on a leash, and the track may close in summer for wildfire risk.

Full day

Roys Peak

DOC gives 16 km return and 5 to 6 hours, with over 1,200 m of climbing to the 1,578 m summit; Lake Wānaka Tourism's listing gives 11 km. DOC says the track is closed for lambing from 1 October to 10 November and reopens on 11 November, has no shade or water, and the car park gets very busy. It suggests Isthmus Peak Track during the closure.

  • Via ferrata

Lake Wānaka Tourism calls Wildwire the highest waterfall cable climb in the world and says no technical climbing experience is needed. The Level 1 listing in our tour list gives about 45 minutes of climbing and 4 bridge crossings, and says it suits beginners and families; its minimum age is 12, and it asks for at least a moderate level of fitness.

  • A wilderness afternoon

Lake Wānaka Tourism describes the Siberia Experience at Makarora: a scenic flight into the Siberia Valley, a walk, then a jet boat down the Wilkin and Makarora rivers.

  • Puzzling World

Lake Wānaka Tourism says it has entertained visitors since the early 1970s, with illusion rooms and buildings that do not sit straight.

Near Wānaka Airport, with vintage cars, aircraft and toys. Lake Wānaka Tourism suggests timing a visit with Warbirds Over Wānaka, an international airshow over Easter weekend; check the airshow's own dates for your year.

05 / From Queenstown

Wānaka as a day trip from Queenstown

  1. 01Allow about an hour each way

Lake Wānaka Tourism gives about 1 hour by the Crown Range, and Destination Queenstown 70 to 80 minutes on its scenic drives page. Our drive guide compares the two roads, the bus and winter chains.

  2. 02Or leave the car behind

Lake Wānaka Tourism says InterCity (operated by GreatSights) and Ritchies Transport run daily buses taking about 1 hour 45 minutes; in Wānaka both use the Log Cabin on the lakefront at 100 Ardmore Street. Check each operator's timetable allows a same day return before you rely on the bus.

  3. 03Or take a guided day

The Arrowtown and Wanaka Highlights Tour from Queenstown in our tour list is a 6 hour small-group day with a Crown Range viewpoint, the Cardrona Hotel, the Wānaka Tree and free time in Wānaka and Arrowtown. The listing says it is not suitable for children under 6.

  4. 04Fit one anchor into the day

In our view, a day trip holds the lakefront, one booked activity such as a lake trip or the via ferrata, and Mount Iron. Leave Roys Peak for a stay in Wānaka; if you stay over, Lake Wānaka Tourism says many activity providers offer free pick-up from Wānaka accommodation. Check the road before you set off home.

06 / When to go

Every season changes the plan, so check what is open

Lake Wānaka Tourism describes summer lake days, autumn colour, a winter with three ski fields, and a spring when you can ski, bike and play on the lake in one day. Two closures shape the walking plan: DOC closes Roys Peak Track from 1 October to 10 November for lambing, and says Mount Iron may close in summer because of wildfire risk. Paddle Wānaka, for one, says it is closed from May through August, so check before you plan a winter paddle. If you are deciding where to base yourself, our Queenstown or Wānaka guide compares the two towns.
