Cable car and 'Uber in the sky' proposed to fix Queenstown traffic

A $6 cable car and an aerial rideshare system are being pitched as solutions to Queenstown's chronic traffic congestion. The proposals come as the town braces for peak ski season crowds, with locals and visitors alike facing daily gridlock on arterial routes.

💡 Allow 20 extra minutes for any drive between Frankton and town during peak hours this ski season.

If you've sat in traffic on Stanley Street or crawled past Frankton Road this week, you know the pain. Two new proposals aim to change that: a $6 cable car linking the town centre to the Skyline complex and a so-called 'Uber in the sky' — a network of electric gondolas connecting key suburbs and the airport. The cable car, estimated at $6 per ride, would offer an alternative to driving up the steep hill to Skyline, while the broader gondola system could eventually link Kelvin Heights, Frankton, and the airport. Stuff reports the proposals are still in early stages, but Queenstown Lakes District Council has expressed interest in exploring both options. 'We need bold thinking,' a council spokesperson said, 'but we also need funding and community buy-in.' For now, drivers should plan extra time, especially between 8-10am and 4-6pm. If built, the cable car could open within five years — but don't hold your breath for this winter.
