What to Wear at Milford Sound: The Essential Packing Guide

Milford Sound receives approximately 8,000mm (8 metres) of rainfall per year, making it one of the wettest inhabited places on Earth. On average, it rains about 200 days per year.

Here's the thing: rain at Milford Sound makes it better. Hundreds of temporary waterfalls appear on the cliff faces. The light becomes dramatic. The atmosphere is primordial and extraordinary.

But being soaked and cold without the right gear will ruin the experience. Here's exactly what to pack.

The Essential Kit

Waterproof Rain Jacket (Non-Negotiable)

A proper waterproof jacket, not a shower-resistant shell, an actual waterproof, is the single most important item for Milford Sound. If you own one, bring it. If you don't, buy or borrow one before you go.

What 'proper waterproof' means: A jacket with a waterproof membrane (Gore-Tex, eVent, or similar) and taped seams. Water-resistant jackets will soak through in sustained heavy rain. Milford Sound rain is sustained and heavy.

What won't work: Fashion raincoats, 'water-resistant' shells, thin ponchos (they blow off on the cruise deck).

If you don't have one: Queenstown outdoor shops (Kathmandu, Macpac, Bivouac) have good options from $150, $400. A cheap poncho from a supermarket ($5, $10) will work as a backup but won't keep you comfortable.

Mid-Layer (Always)

Even in summer, Milford Sound is significantly cooler than Queenstown (typically 5 to 8°C cooler). A fleece, light down jacket, or thick merino top is essential.

Summer: Light fleece or merino jumper Autumn/Winter: Heavier fleece + down jacket

Waterproof Trousers or Quick-Dry Pants

In heavy rain, your legs get wet on the cruise deck. Waterproof overpants are ideal. At minimum, wear quick-drying synthetic trousers rather than jeans (wet denim is miserable and takes hours to dry).

Footwear

Closed-toe shoes with grip, not sandals or jandals. The cruise boat decks can be slippery when wet, and if you do any walks at the end (The Chasm, Key Summit), you need proper footwear.

Waterproof boots or trail runners are ideal. Clean trainers are fine.

Warm Hat and Gloves

In winter and autumn, these are essential on the cruise deck. Even in summer, the open bow of a cruise boat at speed in rain is cold. A beanie packs flat and weighs nothing, always bring one.

Summer (December, February)

• Waterproof jacket (always)
• Light fleece or merino
• T-shirt underneath
• Quick-dry trousers or shorts
• Closed-toe shoes
• Beanie (for the boat deck)
• Sunscreen and sunglasses (sunny days are brilliant at Milford Sound)

Autumn (March, May)

• Waterproof jacket
• Fleece mid-layer
• Thermal base layer
• Waterproof or quick-dry trousers
• Warm hat and light gloves
• Waterproof boots or trail runners

Winter (June, August)

• Waterproof jacket (essential)
• Warm mid-layer fleece
• Heavy thermal base layer (top and bottom)
• Waterproof overpants
• Warm hat, gloves, neck gaiter
• Waterproof boots with grip

Spring (September, November)

• Waterproof jacket
• Fleece mid-layer (days are warming but rain is frequent)
• Thermal base layer
• Quick-dry trousers
• Closed-toe shoes

On the Cruise: Practical Tips

Stay on the upper deck as long as you can. Even in rain, the views from outside are far better than through the cabin windows. With a good rain jacket you can stay comfortable outside for the full 2-hour cruise.

Front of boat = more rain. The bow gets spray when the boat moves forward. The stern (back) is calmer. Choose accordingly.

Dry bags or waterproof phone cases are useful if you plan to photograph from the deck in heavy rain.

The cabin is warm. Every Milford Sound cruise vessel has an enclosed, heated cabin. You can always retreat inside. But try to stay out as long as possible, the views are what you came for.

For Coach Day Trippers

If you're doing the standard coach + cruise day trip from Queenstown, you'll also spend 4.5 hours each way on the bus. Comfortable layering is important for the bus ride, air conditioning can make the bus cold even in summer.

Bring: a neck pillow, headphones, snacks, and water for the bus. The stops at Mirror Lakes and The Chasm are outdoor, so your rain jacket stays accessible.
