Te Anau FAQ

Common Questions, Honest Answers

What travellers ask about basing in Te Anau for Fiordland and Milford Sound.

How far is Te Anau from Milford Sound?

+

About 118 km along State Highway 94, roughly 2 to 2.5 hours each way through the Eglinton Valley and the Homer Tunnel. Te Anau is the last town with fuel, food and services before the fiord, so many visitors fill up here. Basing in Te Anau makes a noticeably shorter, calmer Milford day than driving from Queenstown.

Should you stay in Te Anau or Queenstown for Milford Sound?

+

Te Anau for the shortest, quietest Milford day: 2 to 2.5 hours each way versus about 4.5 to 5 hours from Queenstown, which means an earlier, less crowded cruise. Queenstown wins on nightlife, dining and flight connections. A common plan is to base in Queenstown but stay a night in Te Anau to shorten the Milford leg.

Is Te Anau worth staying in?

+

Yes, especially the night before a Milford or Doubtful Sound trip, as it roughly halves the drive. Beyond that, Lake Te Anau cruises, the Te Anau glowworm caves and the start of the Kepler Track are all on the doorstep, and the town is calmer and cheaper than Queenstown.

What is there to do in Te Anau?

+

Lake Te Anau cruises and kayaking, the Te Anau glowworm caves, lakefront walks, and the town is the launch point for two Great Walks (the Kepler and the Milford) plus day trips to Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound. It is a slower, nature-first base rather than an adventure-sports hub.

What is the best time to visit Te Anau?

+

Late spring to autumn (October to April) suits the Great Walks and settled cruising, with summer busiest. Fiordland is one of the wettest regions in New Zealand year-round, so pack proper rain gear whatever the month. A wet day is not a lost day here: the fiords and waterfalls are at their most dramatic in the rain.
