Getting Around Queenstown: Transport Guide 2026

Car hire, buses, shuttles, bike and foot — the complete Queenstown transport guide

21 March 2026 Queenstown

Queenstown's town centre is compact and very walkable — the waterfront, main shopping area, and most restaurants are within 15 minutes on foot. But to get to ski fields, the Shotover Canyon, Glenorchy, Arrowtown, and Milford Sound, you'll need wheels.

Here's every transport option available.

Walking

For the town itself, walking is the best option. The lakefront path, Queenstown Gardens, central shopping, and most restaurants are all within easy walking distance.

What you can walk to: Steamer Wharf, Queenstown Gardens, main street restaurants and bars, the beach, Skyline Gondola base

What requires transport: Shotover Jet (15 min), ski fields (25–45 min), Arrowtown (20 min), Glenorchy (45 min), Milford Sound (4.5 hours)

Car Hire

For families, groups, or those wanting maximum flexibility, a car is the best Queenstown transport option. It opens up every day trip and activity without depending on shuttle schedules.

Rental companies at Queenstown Airport: - Jucy (budget-friendly, popular with backpackers) - Thrifty, Hertz, Avis, Budget (standard international options) - Snap Rentals (local NZ operator, often cheaper)

Typical costs: - Small car: $60–$100/day - SUV (recommended for Crown Range or winter driving): $80–$130/day - Campervan: $100–$200/day

Winter note: Snow chains or winter tyres are required for the ski field access roads in certain conditions. Most rental companies will advise — ask specifically about this when booking.

Parking: Central Queenstown parking is limited and paid. Free parking is available at the Queenstown Events Centre and Frankton. Most hotels and apartments include parking.

Shuttle Services

For individual activities, shuttles are convenient — you don't have to drive and park, and most activity operators run their own shuttle services.

Shotover Jet shuttle: Included in the ticket price. Departs from central Queenstown.

Ski field shuttles: Run daily from central Queenstown to both Coronet Peak and The Remarkables. Book through your accommodation or at the visitor centre. ~$30–$45 round trip.

Milford Sound day tour: The coach/tour from Queenstown includes all transport. This is the easiest option for Milford Sound.

Arrowtown: Ritchies buses run several times daily (~$15 return). Or a 20-minute drive.

Queenstown Connector Bus (Ritchies)

The Queenstown Connector is the main public bus service, running between central Queenstown, Frankton, Arrowtown, and the airport.

Routes: - Route 1: Queenstown ↔ Frankton ↔ Airport (~20 min, $3–$5) - Route 2: Queenstown ↔ Arrowtown (~30 min, ~$8)

Limitations: No service to ski fields, Glenorchy, or Milford Sound. Infrequent on weekends. Not suitable for activity-based travel.

Taxis & Rideshare

Queenstown has taxis and some rideshare options:

Blue Bubble Taxis — the main local taxi company. Pre-book is recommended.

Uber: Available in Queenstown but limited driver availability. May have surge pricing during peak times.

Cost examples: - Airport to central Queenstown: $25–$35 - Queenstown to Arrowtown: $35–$50 - Queenstown to Shotover Jet: $20–$25

Cycling

Queenstown has a growing network of cycle trails:

Queenstown Trail: A multi-day cycling trail connecting Queenstown, Arrowtown, Gibbston Valley, and Lake Hayes. Sections are accessible as half-day or full-day rides. Excellent in autumn.

Town cycling: Flat around the waterfront and Frankton Arm. Very hilly into the residential suburbs.

Bike hire: Available from multiple operators in central Queenstown. E-bikes are popular for the hilly terrain. From $35/half day.

Bike park: Skyline Bike Park at the top of the gondola offers downhill mountain biking with gondola access.

Airport Transport

Queenstown Airport is 8km from central Queenstown — about 15 minutes by car.

Options: - Shuttle: $15–$20 per person (shared), $35–$45 (private). Book in advance. - Taxi/Uber: $25–$40 depending on time and demand - Car hire: Pick up at the airport (easiest if you're hiring a car anyway) - Bus: Route 1 to Frankton/central (~$5, 20 minutes, infrequent)

Tip: If arriving late or with heavy luggage, book a shuttle in advance. Airport taxis can queue in peak periods.

Summary: Which Transport Option?

| Situation | Recommendation |
|-----------|----------------|
| Staying in central Queenstown | Walk for most things + shuttles for activities |
| Family or group | Car hire (flexibility + cost efficiency) |
| Skiing | Ski field shuttle (no parking hassle at the hill) |
| Milford Sound | Coach tour (includes all transport) |
| Arrowtown | Car or Ritchies bus |
| Glenorchy | Car (bus service is very limited) |
