3-Day Perfect Itinerary
The itinerary we give friends when they visit. Tested. Works. No 5am starts (except Milford, that one's non-negotiable).
Day 1, Arrive + Orient
- βMorning: Land, drop bags. Walk the lakefront to the gardens. Coffee at Vudu (the lard slice is a breakfast, don't argue).
- βMidday: Luge at Skyline. Buy the 5-ride pass. The chairlift views are the real attraction.
- βAfternoon: Pick your poison, bungy (Kawarau, 43m, iconic) or jet boat (Shotover, 25min, hold on).
- βEvening: Fergburger (order online, skip the queue). Nightcap at Atlas Beer CafΓ©.
Day 2, The Big One (Milford Sound)
- β6:45am: Coach pickup. Yes, it's early. Yes, it's worth it. Sit left side going out.
- βThe drive: 5 hours with stops. Mirror Lakes, The Chasm, Homer Tunnel. Your driver is basically a stand-up comic.
- βThe cruise: 1h 45min on the water. Waterproof jacket required. The waterfall spray is not a suggestion.
- βReturn: 7pm-ish. You'll be tired. Grab pizza at The Cow (no reservations, cash only).
Day 3, Wine + Wind Down
- βMorning: Drive to Arrowtown (20 min). Walk the Chinese Settlement. Coffee at The Chop Shop.
- βMidday: Gibbston Valley winery. Cheesery + tasting. Book the cave tour if it's raining.
- βAfternoon: Glenorchy drive (45 min). Stop at Bennetts Bluff for the photo. Keep driving to the red boat shed.
- βEvening: Final dinner at Botswana Butchery. Or keep it real at Devil Burger (Ferg's scrappier sibling, shorter queue).
Weather-Proof Backup Plan
Because Queenstown weather does not care about your itinerary. Here's what to do when it all goes sideways.
Rain (all day)
Gibbston cheesery + cave tour β Onsen Hot Pools (book 2 weeks ahead) β Ice Bar β Cinema Paradiso (sofas + cookies + intermission)
Milford flight cancelled
Glenorchy drive instead (free). Same dramatic scenery, no cloud minimum. Paradise Road is the backup Milford.
Ski fields closed (wind)
Snowshoe tour at Snow Farm (cross-country, no lifts needed) β Cardrona Hotel for mulled wine by the fire β Puzzle World (WΔnaka, yes it's kitschy, yes it's fun)
Too hungover to adventure
Queenstown Gardens frisbee golf β Patagonia hot chocolate β Lakeside walk β Fergbaker pie (the lamb & mint, trust me) β Nap. We've all been there.
