Queenstown Ski Season Accommodation

Every winter, thousands of seasonal workers arrive in Queenstown to work the ski fields. Finding a room is competitive, but with the right approach and the right connections, you can lock in accommodation before you arrive.

⚠️ Queenstown has a well-known winter accommodation shortage. Start looking early (April to May). Most rooms are filled before the first snow falls.

Tips From Seasoned Ski Workers

Start looking in April

Most rooms are secured April to May for the June start. June arrivals face the tightest market. If you wait until you arrive, expect to hostel-hop for 2 to 4 weeks.

Post in the WhatsApp community before you arrive

The community is full of seasonal workers who know when rooms are opening up. Post your dates, budget, and ideal location, people tag you when they see a match.

Be ready to pay bond immediately

Good rooms go within hours. Have your bond (2 to 4 weeks rent) ready to transfer. If you hesitate, someone else takes it.

Consider Frankton and Fernhill

Central Queenstown is the most expensive and competitive. Frankton (10 min drive, bus route) and Fernhill (5 min drive) have more options at lower prices, and both have easy access to the mountains.

Network at the ski field

Once you're working, talk to colleagues. Rooms often open mid-season as people leave. The best leads come from people you work with.

Watch for scams

Never send bond money before seeing the room (or having a trusted person see it). Fake listings target desperate seasonal workers. Use video calls to verify the room and the landlord.
