Otago Regional Council has backed the return of transport liaison groups. It is a step towards structured passenger feedback, not an announcement of new fares or bus timetables.

Key facts

  1. Fact 01

23 September: the council meeting discussed the groups.

  2. Fact 02

28 September: the council published its announcement.

  3. Fact 03

At least three meetings a year are proposed, with a membership update in November.

Queenstown's public transport network is to have a reinstated Transport Liaison Group, following a decision reported by Otago Regional Council on 28 September. The forum is intended to improve communication between passengers, operators, community representatives and the council.

A forum, not a new timetable

The council meeting took place in Queenstown on 23 September. The later media release describes agreement on the proposed groups, their membership process and meeting rhythm. It does not announce a new bus route, a fare reduction or a revised departure time.

That distinction matters if you are planning a car-free stay. Use the current bus information for the journey you intend to make. Do not treat a governance announcement as evidence that a service has changed or that a particular connection will work.

What the council has agreed

Separate groups are proposed for Queenstown and Dunedin. The council says they should meet at least three times a year, in February, July and October. An update including membership details is due to go to the council in November.

The proposed membership model includes operators and regular users, alongside accessibility, community and other perspectives. Those are proposed areas of representation, not a final published list of participants.

Why visitors should keep an eye on it

A bus journey is more than the line on a map: finding the correct stop, understanding an interchange and being able to use the service all affect the experience. A structured feedback forum could help bring those experiences into discussion. That is the intended benefit, not a measured improvement we can claim already.

For now, plan against published passenger information and watch for the membership update. We will cover specific visitor-facing changes when they are announced, rather than presenting the creation of a forum as a service upgrade.

Questions visitors are asking

Does this announcement change my Queenstown bus fare or departure time?

The announcement is about feedback forums. It does not announce a fare or timetable change; check current passenger information for your journey.

When will there be more information about membership?

The council says an update, including membership details, will be provided in November.
