All Four Queenstown-Wānaka Ski Fields Open With Solid Mid-Winter Bases

Queenstown and Wānaka's four alpine ski areas are firing on all cylinders this week, with every lift spinning and base depths holding strong well into August.

Coronet Peak is running at full capacity with all eight lifts open and a 50 cm base. Just across the valley, The Remarkables is sitting pretty on a 95 cm base with all seven lifts turning. Over the Crown Range, Cardrona's eight lifts are serving a 50 cm base with 5 cm of fresh snow in the past 24 hours, while Treble Cone rounds out the quartet with a 65 cm base and all four lifts operational.

Why it matters for visitors: August is historically the most reliable month for Southern Lakes skiing — the snowpack is at its deepest and the days are slowly getting longer. This week's forecast shows passing showers midweek, clearing to fine conditions by Friday. If you're planning a ski day, The Remarkables currently offers the deepest base (95 cm), while Cardrona has the freshest snow. Morning temperatures at the bases are hovering around 0°C to -7°C, so layer up and check the road conditions before you head up — chains are often required on the ski field access roads.
