Good news for anyone planning a South Island road trip: the Government has confirmed it will drop the Auckland regional fuel tax from July 2026, and the conversation about wider fuel tax relief is gaining momentum in Wellington.
The immediate effect is lower pump prices across the board, with some stations already passing on the 11.5 cent per litre saving. For Queenstown visitors, this translates to real savings — think an extra flat white and a cheese roll for every tank of petrol.
Tourism operators are watching closely. 'Anything that lowers the cost of getting around is good for domestic tourism,' said one Queenstown rental car manager. 'People stretch their budgets further and stay longer.'
The timing couldn't be better: spring snow is some of the best skiing in the Southern Hemisphere, and the Crown Range Road to Wanaka just became a few dollars cheaper to drive.
