The ski-season countdown is on. Snow guns are already running at Coronet Peak overnight, and all four major fields around the Queenstown–Wānaka region are targeting mid-to-late June openings for 2026.

**Coronet Peak (NZSki)** — Traditionally the first to open. Closest field to Queenstown (25 min). Strong night-ski programme.

**The Remarkables (NZSki)** — Higher elevation, more reliable snow. 45 min drive from town. Best for families and progression terrain.

**Cardrona (Cardrona Alpine Resort)** — South Island's biggest. Over the Crown Range, 60 min from Queenstown. Strong terrain park.

**Treble Cone (Cardrona Alpine Resort)** — The off-piste lovers' field. 90 min from Queenstown via Wānaka. Best advanced terrain in the region.

Most operators release exact opening dates 7–10 days out, depending on natural snowfall and grooming progress. Lift passes for early-season are typically the cheapest weeks of the entire season — if you're flexible on dates, June is the bargain.

For accommodation, prices step up sharply for July school holidays. Book by end of May for the best mid-June rates.
