The short versionStart here

01 / Short answer

Glenorchy and Paradise are where our sources put the Middle-earth scenes

Destination Queenstown says the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings trilogies turned Queenstown locations into the epic landscapes of Middle-earth. For named places, our sources point to Glenorchy and Paradise. Wikipedia says the Glenorchy area was used for The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), and that Lothlórien, Orthanc and the scene where Boromir was slain near a tree were shot in nearby Paradise. Its Paradise page adds that the locality represented Parth Galen and the part of Lothlórien the Fellowship first enters, and stood in for the exterior of Beorn's house in The Hobbit. Wikipedia's Paradise page carries no citation for these film claims, so treat the scene-by-scene detail as the least firm part of what follows, and use the tour listings below as a way to confirm which sites a guide actually visits.

02 / Places

Four places our sources and listings name

Descriptions come from Wikipedia, Destination Queenstown, the Department of Conservation and our own tour listings, as labelled in each card.

Paradise

Parth Galen, Lothlórien and Beorn's house

Wikipedia says Paradise represented Parth Galen and parts of Lothlórien in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and the exterior of Beorn's house in The Hobbit. It also names Lothlórien, Orthanc and the Boromir tree scene as shot there on its Glenorchy page.

Glenorchy

The gateway to the valley

Wikipedia says the Glenorchy area was one of the settings for The Fellowship of the Ring. One of our listings is titled for Glenorchy and Paradise and names Ithilien, Isengard and Beorn's House among the sites it visits; another is the Lord of the Rings Scenic Tour for Glenorchy.

Mavora

Mavora Lakes, in Southland

Wikipedia says the Mavora Lakes area was used as a film location for the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The Department of Conservation says the park is on gravel roads off State Highway 94, 1 hour 30 minutes from Te Anau, with no regular public transport.

Lake Alta

A Remarkables hike

One of our listings is a guided hike to Lake Alta in the Remarkables and says it was featured in the films. We could not corroborate this site from the other sources used here, so the claim rests on that listing.

04 / Beyond the trilogy

Other screen productions shot around the district

The Lord of the Rings is one of several productions linked to the district. Destination Queenstown lists feature films shot here including The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Amazon series The Rings of Power, Mission Impossible 6, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Vertical Limit, 10,000 BC, The Water Horse, 30 Days of Night, Wolverine and Prince Caspian. Its filming page adds that the region offers mountains, lakes, forests, rivers and small towns within a stone's throw of each other. Wikipedia names Top of the Lake, filmed in Glenorchy, among the television productions. Our view: that spread is why Middle-earth tours here tend to combine several valleys rather than visit a single set, and why the listings in the table name such different places.

05 / Choosing

Decide in this order

  1. 01Pick how long you have

Use the table above. Listed durations run from 1h 10m for the helicopter flight to about 4 to 4h 30m for the half-day tours, and one full-day Mavora listing says its duration varies.

  2. 02Choose the means

The helicopter listing flies over the Shotover River and lands on a glacier, per its own description. The half-day listings travel by 4WD or in small groups, and the private Glenorchy and Paradise listing is described as including some walking on dirt tracks.

  3. 03Read which sites it names

Listings name different places. One names the Argonath and Minas Tirith, another Isengard, Lothlórien and Amon Hen. Our view: pick the listing whose named sites match what you most want to see.

  4. 04Treat Mavora as its own day

The Department of Conservation puts the park 1 hour 30 minutes from Te Anau on gravel roads, and we list the Mavora tour as a full day operating on set days. Check the listing's pickup and operating days.

  5. 05Check cancellation terms

Every Lord of the Rings listing named in this guide carries a free cancellation label. The exact terms are on the booking page.

06 / Before you go

Check these first

These points come from the listings and the official pages quoted above. Details differ between tours, so read the one you plan to book.

  • Independent coverage

This guide is independent. It is not affiliated with the films, their makers or any tour company, and it uses no film stills.

  • Costumes and props

Some listings offer optional costumes, replica swords or props for photos. Others do not mention them, so check the inclusions.

  • Walking

The private Glenorchy and Paradise listing says some walking on dirt tracks is involved. The Lake Alta hike is a guided hike in the Remarkables, so match either to your group's fitness.

  • Mavora access

The Department of Conservation says a gate code is needed to take vehicles along the North Mavora 4WD track, and that cats and other domestic animals are not permitted in the park.

  • Listing details

Listings can change, so confirm duration, pickup and operating days on the booking page.
