Scenery first: a Queenstown plan for couples who skip the thrill rides

Four days, one scenic job each, with a spare day behind Milford Sound

Four days of lake, Glenorchy, Milford Sound and Arrowtown or Wānaka, and what to drop if you have fewer.

Read guide Planning guideCheck sources before travel
The short versionStart here
  1. 1Plan four days, one scenic job each: Lake Wakatipu on Day 1, Glenorchy on Day 2, Milford Sound on Day 3, and Arrowtown or Wānaka on Day 4.
  2. 2Milford Sound is the long day: DOC says Queenstown to Milford Sound takes about 4.5 hours one way by road without stops, and Glenorchy Air says its fly, cruise, fly trip takes 5 to 5½ hours from check in to landing.
  3. 3To shorten the plan to three days, drop Day 4, but then you have no spare day if weather moves Milford Sound.
  4. 4The plan shifts by season: in winter DOC advises leaving later in the morning on the Milford Road, so a same day drive from Queenstown would finish in the dark, and Visit Fiordland says September to November is often unsettled.

01 / Short answer

plan four days of scenery, with Milford Sound on Day 3

What should a couple do in Queenstown for scenery and no high-adrenaline rides? Plan four days and give each one a single view to chase: the lake on Day 1, Glenorchy on Day 2, Milford Sound on Day 3, and Arrowtown or Wānaka on Day 4. We chose four because each day shows a different landscape, and Milford Sound needs a spare day behind it in case weather moves the trip. Nothing in the plan is a thrill ride. To shorten it to three days, drop Day 4, knowing you then have no spare day if weather moves Milford Sound. With two days, keep Milford Sound and the lake cruise, leave Glenorchy for a return trip, and accept that you have no spare day if weather moves Milford Sound.

02 / The plan

What does the four day plan look like?

DaySceneryThe decision
Day 1Lake Wakatipu: the Queenstown Gardens loop and a 90 minute cruise.Walk first or sail first.
Day 2Glenorchy: Bennetts Bluff viewpoint, then one walk.Wetland walk or forest walk.
Day 3Milford Sound and the road to it.Drive, coach or fly.
Day 4Arrowtown and Lake Hayes, or Wānaka.East of town, or over the Crown Range.

03 / Days 1 and 2

What do we do on Day 1 and Day 2?

Day 1 stays on and beside Lake Wakatipu, close to town. Day 2 goes to Glenorchy.

  • Day 1, walk first

DOC's Queenstown day walks brochure lists the Queenstown Gardens loop as 2 km and 40 minutes, starting and finishing at the lakefront on Marine Parade.

  • Day 1, then the water

RealNZ runs a 90 minute TSS Earnslaw cruise from Steamer Wharf, 88 Beach Street, and says the route offers views of the Remarkables and Cecil Peak.

  • Day 1, a high view instead

Skyline describes its gondola as a 480m ascent to Bob's Peak, with views of The Remarkables, Coronet Peak and Queenstown. Swap it for the cruise if you would rather see the lake from above.

  • Day 1, daylight

In winter the sun goes down behind the mountains between 5 and 6pm, Destination Queenstown says, so check sailing times against daylight.

  • Day 1, maintenance break

RealNZ takes the TSS Earnslaw out for annual maintenance each year. Its 2026 break ran from 18 May to 26 June and it has not listed 2027 dates on that page, so if you travel in late autumn or winter, check that the ship is running on your dates.

  • Day 2, drive out

Destination Queenstown says Glenorchy sits a 45 minute drive from Queenstown, at the northern end of Lake Wakatipu on the Queenstown-Glenorchy Road.

  • Day 2, stop at Bennetts Bluff

DOC says the viewpoint walk starts from a carpark halfway between Queenstown and Glenorchy. It is 800 m and 15 minutes return, and DOC says it has views of Lake Whakatipu and Mount Earnslaw/Pikirakatahi.

  • Day 2, walk A, the wetland

DOC lists the Glenorchy Walkway as 1 to 2 hours, over a wetland with plenty of bird life, starting at the northern end of Glenorchy. DOC says the lagoon section floods in heavy or prolonged rain.

  • Day 2, walk B, the forest

DOC lists the Routeburn Nature Walk as 40 minutes to 1 hour, a loop track in beech forest, starting at the end of the Glenorchy-Routeburn Road, some 35 minutes from Glenorchy. DOC says the road is narrow, may not suit large campervans, and is gravel on its last section.

  • Day 2, plan for no signal

DOC says mobile coverage in the area is only in Glenorchy township and that weather can change quickly at any time of year. Check the forecast before you go.

04 / Day 3

How do we do Milford Sound without a rushed day?

  1. 01Choose how to get there

By road, DOC says about 4.5 hours one way without stops and refers to a nine-hour return drive. By coach, RealNZ says about 5 hours each way with a 1.5 to 2 hour cruise. By air, Glenorchy Air says its flights are about 40 minutes each way and the whole trip is 5 to 5½ hours from check in to landing.

  2. 02Book around the weather

Air Milford says its flights operate about 250 days a year because of weather, and a flight can move to the next fine day. That is why Day 4 stays flexible.

  3. 03If you drive

DOC says there are no fuel stations or shops between Te Anau and Milford Sound, and mobile coverage is patchy. DOC also says to allow more time than journey planners advise.

  4. 04Short stops

DOC lists Mirror Lakes as 400 m return, 10 minutes, about 56 km north of Te Anau. It lists The Chasm as 400 m return, 20 minutes, but says the site and its car park are closed to all visitors for construction, which it expects to finish by the end of November 2026, weather permitting. Check DOC's alert before you plan the stop. DOC says the road between the Hollyford Road junction and The Chasm is a no-stopping zone because of avalanche risk.

  5. 05The fiord

RealNZ lists its Signature Cruise as 2 hours and says cruise length varies with the boat, weather and conditions. DOC says Mitre Peak's rock walls rise 1,692 m from the water, and RealNZ says Stirling Falls cascades 146 metres.

  6. 06If it rains

DOC says Milford Sound gets up to 7 metres of rain a year. Visit Fiordland says the fiords are particularly dramatic on rainy days, with mist and waterfalls on display.

05 / Day 4

Which side of town should Day 4 cover?

Pick one. They point in different directions.

Option A

Arrowtown

Destination Queenstown says the autumn leaves paint Arrowtown red and gold in April and May. DOC says panels at the Chinese Settlement tell the miners' story in English and Chinese. Several stores, including the Museum, hire gold pans for the Arrow River, the Arrowtown business association says.

Also in Option A

Lake Hayes loop

Destination Queenstown lists the Lake Hayes loop as 8 km and 2 to 3 hours, shared with bikes. Queenstown Trails describes long sections of narrow boardwalk at the southern end and says to carry water.

Option B

Wānaka

Lake Wanaka Tourism says the Crown Range Road typically takes 45 to 60 minutes under normal conditions and can take significantly longer in winter. It is sealed, but it is a high alpine pass with steep gradients and tight corners. Snow chains must be carried from May to October, it says, and it recommends the 1 hour 15 minute route via Cromwell in poor weather. DOC lists the Mount Iron Track as a 4.5 km loop taking 1 hour 30 minutes, says it may close in summer for wildfire risk, and warns of ice and mud in winter.

06 / What to skip

What can we leave out?

SkipWhy you canIf you still want it
Roys Peak TrackDOC lists 16 km and 5 to 6 hours return. With Lake Wanaka Tourism's hour or so of driving each way, that is a full day from Queenstown, and DOC closes it for lambing from 1 October to 10 November each year.DOC suggests Isthmus Peak Track during the closure, and says it is a similar length and difficulty.
Queenstown Hill Time WalkDOC lists 2 to 3 hours, 5.4 km return, climbing some 500 m. Bennetts Bluff already gives a viewpoint on Day 2.DOC says the summit view includes the Remarkables, Cecil Peak, Frankton Arm and Queenstown Bay.
Frankton Track and Kelvin Peninsula TrailDOC lists 16.4 km one way from the Queenstown Gardens.Queenstown Trails lists the Kelvin Peninsula Sculpture Trail as a 3.5 km loop of about 1 hour.
A second fiordDay 3 already covers one fiord. Our Milford Sound versus Doubtful Sound guide compares them.
Jet boats, bungy, skydivingLeft out by design. Our adventure planner covers them.

07 / By season

How does the plan change through the year?

SeasonWhat published sources sayWhat to change
Summer, Dec to FebDestination Queenstown names December, January and February as the warmest months. NIWA's 1991 to 2020 mean daily maximum is 22°C in January.Check for Mount Iron closures before choosing Wānaka on Day 4.
Autumn, Mar to MayDestination Queenstown says golden and red hues dominate the hills from March to May.Choose Arrowtown for Day 4. The Arrowtown Autumn Festival lists 15 to 18 April 2027.
Winter, Jun to AugNIWA's mean daily maximum in Queenstown is 8.2°C in July. DOC says traffic is lower in winter, so it advises leaving later in the morning, from 9 am onwards, and says snow chains may be required. It does not say where from: from Queenstown, a 9 am start reaches Milford Sound at about 1.30 pm without stops, and Visit Fiordland puts Fiordland's winter sunset at about 4.30 pm.Take a coach on Day 3, as DOC advises if you are not confident in winter conditions, or fly. If you still want to drive, stay in Te Anau the night before: DOC puts Te Anau to Milford Sound at about 2.5 hours. Do Day 2 walks before the early sunset.
Spring, Sep to NovVisit Fiordland says Fiordland is often unsettled in September to November, with more wind and rain.Leave Day 4 open for Milford Sound.

People also ask

What couples ask about scenery in Queenstown

What are the best things to do in Queenstown for couples who want scenery but not high-adrenaline activities?
Lake Wakatipu, Glenorchy, Milford Sound and Arrowtown or Wānaka make four scenic days with no thrill rides. Walk the Queenstown Gardens loop and take the 90 minute TSS Earnslaw cruise, stop at Bennetts Bluff, spend a long day at Milford Sound, then choose Arrowtown or Wānaka.
How many days do we need for a scenic Queenstown trip?
Four days is the plan here: one for the lake, one for Glenorchy, one for Milford Sound and one for Arrowtown or Wānaka. The fourth day also absorbs a weather change to Milford Sound. With three days, drop Day 4; with two, keep Milford Sound and the lake cruise.
Should we drive, take a coach or fly to Milford Sound?
DOC says the drive takes about 4.5 hours one way without stops, and advises a coach if you are not confident in winter conditions. Glenorchy Air says its fly, cruise, fly trip takes 5 to 5½ hours from check in to landing. Flights depend on weather, so keep a spare day.
What if it rains in Queenstown?
Move the walks, not the whole plan. Visit Fiordland says Milford Sound is particularly dramatic on rainy days, and RealNZ says its cruise is likely to go ahead in most weather apart from a road closure due to snow, and that very strong wind is usually the only weather that cancels it. DOC says the Glenorchy lagoon section floods in heavy or prolonged rain, so choose the forest walk.
Do we need a hire car for this plan?
Not for every day. The lake cruise leaves from the Steamer Wharf, Orbus runs to Arrowtown, and Milford Sound can be done by coach or flight. Destination Queenstown says local operators provide year-round transport to and from Glenorchy and its tracks, but check whether yours stops at Bennetts Bluff. A car gives you the most freedom on Day 2 and on Day 4 if you choose Wānaka.

The takeaways

  1. 01Give each of four days one scenic job: the lake, Glenorchy, Milford Sound, then Arrowtown or Wānaka.
  2. 02Put Milford Sound on Day 3 so Day 4 can absorb a weather change; DOC says the drive is about 4.5 hours each way.
  3. 03Leave out the long climbs: DOC lists Roys Peak Track at 5 to 6 hours return and closes it from 1 October to 10 November each year.
  4. 04To shorten the plan, drop Day 4; to change it by season, use the table of what shifts.
