Peter Jackson chose Glenorchy for its untouched beech forests, braided river valleys, and the dramatic backdrop of Mount Earnslaw. The road from Queenstown to Glenorchy was described by cast members as "the greatest commute in film history" - a winding shoreline drive with the mountains reflecting in mirror-calm water.
Today Glenorchy remains largely unchanged from its on-screen appearance. The same beech forests, the same crystal rivers, and the same small-town charm welcome visitors from around the world who come to walk where hobbits walked.
